CONCERNING THE VALENCES OF THE CERIUM ALLOTROPES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4765954
An analysis of the metallic radii and magnetic susceptibility data concerning the alpha -, BETA -, gamma -, and alpha - gamma intermediate'' phases of cerium was made in order to estimate the metallic valences of these phases. At room temperature and pressure the metallic valences of BETA - and gamma -Ce are estimated to be 3.05. The valence of alpha -Ce depends upon pressure and temperature, at 116 deg K and 1 atm the estimated valence is 3.62; at 298 deg K and 7670 atm, 3.51; and at the alpha - gamma critical point, 3.25. The valence of the alpha - gamma intermediate'' cerium phase was calculated to be 3.18. No evidence was found to support the existence of a tetravalent state in metallic cerium. It is noted that a valence of 4 for cerium is merely a convenient notation, but does not describe the true situation. A model, which accounts qualitatively for the observed facts, is proposed. (auth)
