Production of Radioisotopes at the Institute of Atomic Energy. Iodine-131 and Phosphorus-32; PRODUCAO DE RADIOISOTOPES NO INSTITUTO DE ENERGIA ATOMICA. IODO 131 AND FOSFORO 32
The apparatus and methods for the preparation of I/sup 131/ from irradiated telluric acid and of P/sup 32/ from irradiated magnesium sulfate are described. In the case of I/sup 131/, it is sufficient to dissolve the telluric acid in water in the presence of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide so that the iodine formed in the irradiation can be distilled. In the method described, the difficulties of carrier dissolution are eliminated by the use of elementary tellurium, and the final product has satisfactory radiochemical and radioactive purity characteristics. In the case of P/sup 32/, magnesium sulfate is used as the irradiation target. The advantage obtained by the use of material soluble in water is: ease of manipulation of apparatus made only of glass, thus avoiding the use of autoclaves or rigorous vacuum control. The techniques used to verify the purity and to determine the yield of the final product are described. (tr-auth)
