MECHANISM OF COSMIC RAY STORMS INFERRED FROM SOME STATISTICAL RESULTS
Recently, evidence that cosmic-ray storms (Forbush decreases) usually correspond to solar flares accompanied by major solar radio outbursts on the VHF band, so called Type IV outbursts, has been reported. In the present investigation, the above evidence is confirmed by extended data of four years including IGY. Some statistical results on cosmic-ray storms concerned with heliographic position of flares and propagation time of storms are found. It is concluded that the larger cosmic-ray decreases are apt to be excited by the geomagnetic disturbances having shorter propagation time and flares at nearly 30 deg east heliographic longitude. These facts lead to the conception that an expanding corpuscular cloud having an intense magnetic field trails towards the east, so that cosmic-ray storms are the biggest from flares of the solar east hemisphere. Discussion is also presented on a physical picture of the cloud concerned with cosmic-ray storms. (auth)
