The magnetic record obtained about 5400 km (great circle) from Johnston Island, following a high-altitude (about 400 km) megaton nuclear explosion above this island at 09:00 UT on July 9, 1962, is described. The magnetic response consists of an increase larger than 18 gamma in the geomagnetic field, followed by an oscillatory decay of this increase, Several hypotheses are presented to explain the high signal-propagation rate required by the data.
