A radiometric gage for measuring the mass per unit area or density of materials is designed whose operation can be checked in the field. The gage comprises a first ionization chamber detector for measuring the radiation passing through the material to give a first d-c signal, a second detector giving a second d-c signal, means for combining the first and second d-c signals in bucking relationship, a movable iris device for controlling the energization of the second detector, means for moving the iris device in response to the combined d-c signal, means for establishing an indicating signal responsive to the position of the iris device, and means for biasing the indicating signal through an ammeter so that zero current passes through the ammeter with a free air gap between the radiation source and the first detector.
