AN IMPROVEMENT OF THE COINCIDENCE METHOD FOR THE ABSOLUTE DETERMINATION OF THE DECAY RATES OF RADIOACTIVE PREPARATIONS (in German)

In all versions of the coincidence method in which energy-sensitive detectors and pulse analyzers must be used for the calibration of the counting tube efficiency, the pulse causes complications when the two coinciding beams produce one effect in the same detector. The sum pulse has a different spectrum from the individual pulse and the probability that the sum pulse will be counted is not the same as that for the individual pulse. The essential innovation reported is a breakdown of the counting probabilities: W/sub ij/ as the probability that one of two coinciding radiations would produce an effect in one of two detectors and with V/sub ij/ as the probability that one effect of radiation j in the detector i would have a pulse which would be counted. The counting rates in the three scales of coincidence apparatus are tabulated. An example is given of a gamma - gamma cascade measured using a two-channel pulse analyzer. (J.S.R.)
