THE USE OF ION EXCHANGE COLUMNS IN THE MEASUREMENT OF DOSES BELOW 1000 RAD WITH THE FRICKE DOSIMETER

Journal Article · · Intern. J. Appl. Radiation Isotopes
ABS>The use of Fe/sup 59/ as tracer in the solution of the Fricke dosimeter for low doses is discussed. Solvent extraction as a means of separating the ferric ions from the ferrous ions involves considerable error, and it was found that a zirconium phosphate ion-exchange column simplified the separation. Ferrous ions are eluted with 0.1N H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/, while ferric ions are retained on the column but may be eluted with 6N HCl. A dosimetric procedure using Fe/sup 59/ and ionexchange separation is outlined; it was found suitable for measuring doses from 1000 to 40 rad, and the lower limit is 10 to 20 rad. (D.L.C.)
