ON THE SENSITIVITY OF LIQUIDS TO IRRADIATION (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Zh. Eksperim. i Teor. Fiz.

It was previously shown that vapor bubbles are formed along charged particle tracks at certain temperatures. Experiments were conducted to analyze the sensitivity of a liquid to charged particles during a fast drop in pressure. The pressure in a propane filled bubble chamber at 68 deg C was decreased within 2 mu sec from 34 to 13 to 19 atm during Co/sup 60/ gamma irradiation. The results showed that vapor bubbles are initiated by irradiation in unheated liquid and grow to a size that can be observed ( approximates 10/sup -2/ cm). The sensitivity (number of bubbles in a unit volume and track density) is determined by the pressure drop rate and the absolute pressure. The sensitivity is enhanced at higher dP/dt, Observations were made at dP/dt from 0.3 to 2.0 atm/sec, (R.V.J.)
