MANNESMANN ROTARY PIERCING OF URANIUM. Terminal Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4763143
Four campaigns were undertaken to determine the feasibility of rotary piercing U billets to tubing in the alpha phase. A host of parameters including billet temperature, roll opening, entrance angle of the roll surface, angle of obliquity between the roll axes and the axis of the billet, and piercing point location were varied during the campaigns, but to no avail. All attempts resulted in dudded billets. However, it was demonstrated in the third campaign that the fabrication of tubing by rotary piercing in the gamma phase range may be easily accomplished.
