THE PHOTOLYSIS AND RADIOLYSIS OF CH$sub 3$$N$$sub 2$CH$sub 3$ AND CH$sub 3$$N$$sub 2$CH$sub 3$-CD$sub 3$$N$$sub 2$CD$sub 3$ MIXTURES
Azomethane was photolyzed in the solid, liquid, and gaseous phases. In the gas phase photolysis, evidence was obtained for the formation of ethane by a molecular elimination from azomethane. The quantum yield of the formation of nitrogen in the liquid phase was lower than unity and decreased with decrease in temperature. Benzene quenched and 2,3-dimethylbutane enhanced the decomposition yield. The effect of collisionai deactivation, molecular elimination, and free radical recombination in the cage on the total yield of ethane is discussed. Radiolysis experiments on mixtures of CH/sub 3/N/sub 2/CH/sub 3/-CD/sub 3/N/sub 2/ CD/sub 3/ were performed in the l iquid and solid phases. The results indicate that ethane is formed mainly by cage and intercage recombination in the gamma - ray spur. A decrease in temperature and addition of solvents had a reducing effect on the relative yield of CH/sub 3/CD/sub 3/. Evidence for energy transfer from benzene to azomethane was obtained. (auth)
