The Extraction of Americium and Europium Nitrates by Tri-n-octyl Phosphine Oxide in Toluene

The extraction behavior of americium and europium is studied in TOPO (tri-n-octylphosphine oxide) nltric acid system. The distribution ratios (Kd values are measured as functions of nitric acid, hydrogen ion, nitrate ion, and TOPO concentration. The results lend support to the conclusion that only free TOPO extracts smericium and/or europium. By using this conclusion, the maximal Kd value and corresponding acidity are estimated. The peak positions of Kd for the extractions of thorium and zirconium are also studied in this system. These values are consistent with experimental values.
