MONOCHROMATIC NEUTRON ABSORPTION CROSS SECTION FOR U$sup 235$ AT ENERGIES RANGING FROM 0.02 TO 2 ev (in Russian)

The energy dependence of the absorption cross section of U/sup 235/ was determined by means of a chopper installed in the horizontstl beam of the RFT reactor, using a flight distance of 17.24 m at a maximum resolution of 1.4 mu sec/m. A spherical chamber, in the center of which the sample was placed, was used for detecting the neutrons in the BF/sup 3/ gas filling the space between the double spherical walls. A positive potential of 3 kv was applied on the inner sphere serving as the selector electrode. Cylindrical, 28-mmdiam. and 0.5- , 2-, and 8-nan-thick U samples containing 90.3% U/sup 235/ were used for the measurements, while Zr specimens containing B served for the calibration of the experimental apparatus. The character of the energy dependence curve of sigma / sub c/ was found to be quite similar to that of sigma /sub t/; the actual value of sigma /sub c/ at the thermal point E/sub n/ = 0.0253 ev was found to be 670 barn, agreeing well with data reported by K. Case et al. ( Introduction to the Theory of Neutron Diffusion,'' Los Alamos, 1953). The value of ( sigma /sub t/ - sigma /sub c/) obtained from these curves varies within wide limits but does not disagree with reported values of the scattering cross section of U/sup 235/; it tends to increase in the resonance level range, at 2.04 and 1.13 ev, probably because of resonance scattering.
