The optical model, involving the diffuse complex potential, allows definition of sigma /sub t/, the total cross section of the interaction of the neutrons with nuclei; it may be used also for calculating the inelastic scattering and radiative capture cross sections sigma /sub in/ and sigma /n gamma /. This method was used for determining the energy dependence of the various neutron cross sections, which make up the total cross section of a given nucleus and the transport cross section sigma /sub tr/ for the U/sup 238/ nucleus. The Woods-Saxon type potentials (Phys. Rev., orbital interactions. The total, transport, and formation cross sections were measured within an energy range from 40 kev to 16 Mev. The excitation scheme of U/sup 238/ was taken to agree with that of Pu/sup 238/. Satisfactory agreement was obtained with data reported by L. Kranberg and J. Levin (Phys. Rev., 109: 2063 (1958)) for both the total inelastic scattering cross section and the excitation functions of the first two levels: 2/sup +/ (44 kev) and 4/sup +/ (146 kev). The data concerning the inelastic scattering cross sections corresponding to the excitation of the levels with an average energy of about 730 kev in the cited work agree with the total excitation cross section for the 1- (605 kev) and 3(656 kev) levels. Use of the optical model is thus considered justified. (TTT)
