TRANSFORMATIONS OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL DATA

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4760702

The problems arising when a frequency distribution that was measured as a function of two variables must be transformed into a distribution as a function of two variables that are different from but functionally related to the original ones are considered. The original grid, or matrix, in which the data were collected does not coincide with the grid representing the transformed data. The question, therefore, arises of how the number of recorded events constituting an element of the original matrix is to be apportioned among the elements of the transformed matrix. It is possible for fluctuations, not present in the original data, to appear in the transformed data if this problem is not handled properly. Several methods of handling this problem are discussed. Results obtained using some of them are presented. Their relative merits are considered. (auth)
