CALCULATION OF BUILDUP FACTORS FOR $gamma$-RADIATION IN HETEROGENEOUS MEDIA (in Russian)

Journal Article · · At. Energ. (USSR)
OSTI ID:4760609
The applicability of the authors' semi-empirical formula for calculating the buildup factor of the Co/sup 60/ gamma radiation in heterogeneous media (At. Energ., 12: 20(1962) No. 1) to energies of 2.76 and 6.4 Mev was investigated, using Na/sup 24/ as the source of the 2.76-Mev gamma quanta. The attenuation factors for the 2.76- and 1.38-Mev lines, the only ones considered, were taken from U. Fano's work (Nucleonics obtain the 6,4-Mev gamma quanta by accelerating the protons in a linear accelerator to 0.88 Mev and directing them onto a CaF/sup 2/ crystal. Comparison of the experimental and theoretical data indicated that the cited formula is applicable in the energy range from 1 to 6.5 Mev; it might be possible to use it at even higher energies. (TTT)
