Basic principles underlying the techniques of low-energyneutron diffraction and inelastic scattering by solids is presented. An account of experimental apparatus suitable for this kind of work is given. Reference is made to the crystal spectrometer in operation at the Ispra-1 reactor. Some neutron diffraction patterns are shown. Only coherent scattering is discussed, and, for the sake of simplicity, the diffraction of neutrons by a solid is treated as an essentially elastic process. (auth)
