ON ION OSCILLATIONS IN A HOMOGENEOUS MAXWELLIAN PLASMA

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4759887
It has been known for a long time that longitudinal ion oscillations in a collisionless Maxwellian plasma are damped by the Landau mechanism. The damping is very strong except when the electron temperature is much higher than the ion temperature. This paper contains a calcuiation of the phase velocity and the damping of longitudinal ion waves in a homogeneous Maxwellian plasma as a function of the ion temperature over the electron temperature. In the appendix the corresponding calculation is performed for a semi-collisionless plasma model where the ions are regarded as collisionless while the electrons obey an adiabatic hydrodynamic law.
