POWER FLATTENING IN SODIUM GRAPHITE REACTOR CORES

Although most reactors were constructed with uniform fuel and moderator characteristics, it is possible with nonuniform material distribution to improve reactor power and temperature characteristics. Approaches to such improvement by nonuniform fuel distribution, nonuniform fuel enrichment, nonuniform moderator density, nonuniform moderator materials distribution, and nonuniform absorber distribution were investigated. Distribution functions are derived for the parameters to be varied. Three of these methods are considered for application to the SGR critical assembly. The necessary distributions for nonuniform enrichment, nonuniform spatial fuel distribution, and nonuniform absorber distribution are obtained, along with the approximations necessary for experiments on the SGR critical assembly.
