Recent theoretical and experimental values of the cross section for the photodetachment of the negative hydrogen ion are checked for consistency with a number of sum rules. Attention is drawn to the unusually large cross sections to be expected for the photodetachment process in which the final state of the hydrogen atom is in the 2s state. (auth)
