REACTIVITIES OF ORGANIZED BIOCHEMICAL SYSTEMS WITH RADIATION-PRODUCED RADICALS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4758362
BS>chemical systems in dilute aqueous solutions with radioinduced free radicals. Erioglaucine was used as the reference compound. Data are presented on the relative rate constants for reactions of amino acids and dipeptides with radicals produced in irradiated water, a comparison of estimated and experimentally determined relative rate constants, the relative rate constants for reactions of sugars and polysaccharides with radicals produced in irradiated water, the relative rate constants for reactions of agarose with radicals produced in irradiated water, and the protection against radioinduced hemolysis of red blood cells afforded by valine, histidine, tryptophan, or erioglaucine. The effects of rate constants for two competing biomolecular reactions, the additivity of values, and the effect of protein structure on free radical attack on results are discussed. (C.H.)
