Serial fibrinogen levels were determined in rabitts following various doses of abdominal x-ray, alone and in conjunction with intravenous injections of Gram-negative endotoxin. The changes in this protein were correlated morphologically with the development of diffuse vascular fibrinoid lesions. No heparin-precipitable fibrogen (HPF) was demonstrated following abdominal x ray, but the prevention of development of the lesions by the administration of heparin at the time of administration of endotoxin suggests that similar mechanisms operate in the production of x-ray endotoxin lesions and in those of the generalized Shwartzman phenomenon.
