CHROMIUM(VI)-1,5-DIPHENYLCARBOHYDRAZIDE REACTION AND THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RADIATION ON IT
The effect of gamma radiation on the reaction between Cr(VI) and 1,5- diphenylcarbohydrazide (DPC), commonly used for the spectrophotometric determination of Cr, was studied. The mode of reaction between Cr(VI) and DPC was clarified. An excess of Cr(VI) oxidizes the colored intermediate, and the DPC can be titrated to a colorless end point with a standard solution of Cr(VI). Extraction studies on the Cr-DPC intermediate, in which Cr/sup 51/ was used as a tracer, proved that the Cr(III) is not intimately tied to the chromophoric group. Under the conditions used. Cr(VI) is sensitive to gamma radiation to the extent that approximately 2,5 x 10/sup -9/ mmoles per milliliter per roentgen is reduced, Both the DPC reagent and the Cr- DPC intermediate are much less sensitive to gamma radiation, being affected only about 10% as much as is Cr(VI). At levels of gamma radiation less than 1000 r, the effect of radiation introduces very little error in the method. (auth)
