COPOLYMERIZATION OF VINYL ACETATE AND SULFUR DIOXIDE BY IONIZING RADIATION

Journal Article · · J. Polymer Sci. Pt. B

Studies were made of the copolymerization of equimolar mixtures of vinyl acetate and SO/sub 2/ by Co/sup 60/ gamma rays. The copolymerization has a ceiling temperature of --20 deg C and a maximum near --60 deg C in the liquid state. Solid-state polymerization occurs at approximates 150 deg C. Infrared spectra of the copolymer and of pure polyvinyl acetate are compared. The copolymers were found to have 20 to 21% sulfur, indicating a 1: 1 composition. (D.L.C.)
