ENVIRONMENTAL RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION AS A FACTOR IN NUCLEAR PLANT SITING CRITERIA

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4757281
The understamding of environmental exposure problems associated with nuclear energy has not maintained the advanced progressive pace that was attained in the beneficial uses of nuclear energy. For normal operations of chemical processing facilities and for the accidental release associated with power reactors, ingestion is the most important path of environmental exposure resulting from the atmospheric release of fission products. Depending upon the meteorology of any particular site, land activities at distances as far as 50 km may be affected. A sizable release of fission products will have far reaching effects on dairying or agricultural operations. The distances at which land use restrictions raay be required are such as to preclude eliminating the problem of site selection. Emphasis must be placed on confinement of the radioactivity within the facility. (H.G.G.)
