Alterations on the liquid helium transfer system for cooling crystals in the vertical field electromagnet permit continuous operation for up to a day and a half and maintenance of temperature at 2.85 deg K within plus or minus 0.03 deg K for the storage life. An induction furnace recently installed permits growth of pure palladium and 99% Pd--1% Fe single crystal ingots. Polarized neutron scattering studies of vanadium reveal that J field of 22 K gauss will induce an atomic magnetic moment of 0.0010 Bohr magnetons/atom, leading to a magnetic form factor of the resultant magnetic scattering that is characteristic of 3d electrons. Assumption that the paramagnetic susceptibility is due to 3d orbital magnetization and a smaller 3d spin magnetization gives good agreement with theory. Paramagnetic and electronic polarization are both noted to be temperature independent to 15 deg K. Below 15 deg K with an applied field of 13.2 K gauss, additional polarized neutron scattering effects develop due to nuclear polarization with a consequent change in the coherent nuclear scattering amplitude of vanadium. Failure of the polarization ratio to go to unit value as the field goes to zero in electronic polarization studies of vanadium reveals the existence of a neutron spinorbit interaction. Experimental and theoretical evidence for the interaction is noted. (D.C.W.)
