Generation of horizontally polarized shear waves by underground explosions

From an analysis of the propagation of compressional and SH waves from underground explosions Wright and Carpenter (J. Geophys. Res., 67: 1956(1962)) concluded that there is a mode of SH waves which attenuates much more slowly near the source than does the compressional wave, and that this accounts for the prominence of recorded shear waves. It is suggested that their result appears to arise from errors in the analysis. These errors are discussed.
