In connection with the feasibility study of a D/sub 2/O-moderated, organic-cooled power reactor, called DOR, at Riso Research Establishment, studies are carried out on the thermal and radiolytic stability of some potential organic coolants. Results are presented concerning the thermal stability at temperatures of 400 to 500 deg C of the three isomeric terphenyls, as well as of commercial mixtures of these isomers, such as Santowax R, OM 1, OM 2, and OMP. The decomposition is followed through the determination of the gas formation (hydrogen and lower hydrocarbons), through the isomerization of the terphenyls and through the formation of benzene, biphenyl, and higher polyphenyls. The kinetics of the pyrolysis are discussed by comparison of the pure terphenyls and their mixtures, and activation energies are given. (auth)
