PHOTOPRODUCTION OF MUON PAIRS IN CARBON

A 1000-Mev synchroton on bremsstrahlung beam was used in the production of muon pairs from a carbon target. From events in which electromagnetic muons were detected, ratios of the absolute experimental cross sections to the theoretical were calculated for three momentum channels of the mu /sup +/ and for two angular channels of the mu /sup -/. Theoretical values were calculated from the Bethe-Heitler formula, and the average difference from the experimental values is only about 5%. (H.D.R.)
