POSITIVE PION PRODUCTION BY POLARIZED BREMSSTRAHLUNG

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4755976
By selecting bremsstrahlung produced by 600-Mev electrons in a very thin foil, at a very small angle to the original election direction, a beam of polarized photons was obtained. The variation of polarization and intensity with mean angle of emission of the photons was found to be in qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions. The polarized photon beam was used to produce positive pi -mesons from hydrogen at 90 deg cm angle of meson emission at photon energies of 242, 296, 337, and 376 Mev. The ratio of meson production along and at right angles to the electric field vector of the producing photon was measured and compared with theoretical predictions. The results agree with the relativistic dispersion theory of Chew, Low, Goldberger, and Nambu. (Dissertation Abstr., 23: No. 4, 1962)
