EFFECT OF HIGH LEVELS OF IONIZING RADIATION ON ANIMAL TISSUES. Contract Research Terminal Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4755827
Two general classes of carbonyl compounds were formed in animal tissues exposed to doses of ionizing radiations required for radiation processing. The group of watersoluble carbonyl compounds consisted largely of keto-acids derived from the oxidative deamination of amino acids. The group of diphatic carbonyl compounds was apparently derived from the radioinduced degradation of various lipid molecules. Analytical methods for the determination of lipid-derived carbonyl compounds are described. The toxicity of the carbonyl compounds was investigated in rats. It was concluded that the formation of carbonyl compounds during the radiation processing of meats does not (C.H.) available radioisotopes. The data show that medical expo
