A new method for measuring sodium excretion in sweat, utilizing Na/sup 22/, is described. The physical characteristics of the radioisotope are very favorable and the test procedure is simple. The method has been applied to 50 control subjects, 20 patients with chronic lung disease, and 4 patients with fibrocystic disease of the pancreas. The results show a significant elevation of sweat Na excretion in patients with chronic lung disease, but not to the degree seen in patients with cystic fibrosis of the pancreas. These findings are compatible with the concept that some patients with chronic lung disease may have a form of pancreatic fibrosis not clinically detectable. (auth)
