AN EVALUATION OF SOME HEAVY-WATER-MODERATED POWER-REACTOR CONCEPTS
An investigation was made at the ASEA Nuclear Power Division in order to compare the economic merits and development potentialities of some heavy-water- moderated natural-uranium-fueled types of power reactors. The main purpose was to find out whether any of the examined concepts appeared more promising for the future than the pressurized heavy-water-cooled, tank-type reactor, which has up to now formed the basis for most of the reactor development work within Sweden. The conclusion drawn from this investigation was that direct-cycle boiling-water reactors, eventually with nuclear superheating, and the CO/sub 2/cooled reactor, offer significant advantages over the pressurized-water reactor, and should be considered for the Swedish heavy-water reactor development program.
