RAPID METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PLUTONIUM IN RADIOACTIVE EFFLUENTS
Plutonium was separated from other active constituents by co- precipitation with LaF/sub 3/, subsequent reduction to Pu(IV) and extraction with 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone in xylene; the organic extract was evaporated to dryness and ashed before final determination of the alpha activity with a scintillation counter. If large amounts of Ca are known to be present (>200 mg per liter), they may be removed by precipitation as CaF/sub 2/ from solution containing Pu as Pu(IV), and the Pu is subsequently reduced to Pu(IV) and extracted from the solution with 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone as described. A precision of plus or minus 5% is reported for 1 to 5 x 10/sup -4/ mu C of Pu. (Public Health Eng. Abstr., 42: No. 9, Sept. 1962)
