Title: DIFFERENTIAL THERMAL ANALYSIS OF THE DECOMPOSITION OF SODIUM BICARBONATE, TRONA, AND WEGSCHEIDER'S SALT

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4754001· OSTI ID:4754001

The thermal decompositions of sodium bicarbonate, trona, and Wegscheider's salt were studied in a closed system by means of differential thermal analysis and x-ray diffraction analyses. The energies of activation and empirical orders of the thermal decompositions of these materials were calculated from the differential thermograms using Kissinger's equations. The decomposition products of trona, sodium bicarbonate, and Wegscheider's salt were identified by x-ray diffraction. A reacti on sequence involving the formation of Wegscheider's salt is proposed to explain the thermal anomalies previously observed in the decomposition of sodium bicarbonate in a closed system.
