The Co--Gd alloy system was investigated throughout the whole composition range by microstructure determination methods, differential thermal analysis, and microhardness measurements. Twenty-five alloy compositions were prepared by melting the mixtures in an arc furnace. The microstructure of the specimens indicated that the solubility of Gd in Co and of Co in Gd at room temperature does not exceed 0.2 to 0.3 wt%; alloys containing 1.0% of Gd and 0.5% of Co presented large amounts of a eutectic second phase. The existence of 8 previously reported comPounds, GdCo/sub 5/, GdCo/sub 4/, GdCo/sub 2/, GdCo/sub 2/ , GdCo, and Gd/sub 3/C o, were confirmed together with a new compound Gd/sub 2/Co/ sub 17/ which has a trigonal crystal structure with the following parameters: a = 8.535 kX; c = 12.429 kX; and c/a = 1.458. Two eutectic mixtures were found at the Co side of the diagram together with 2 Gd-rich compounds, CoGd/sub 3/ and CoGd. Hardness changes showed that addition of Gd strengthened somewhat the alpha -Co in the solid solution range; in the 2-phase region the hardness increased with increasing Co/sub 17/Gd/sub 2/ content. Addition of Gd decreased the specific magnetization at room temperature. The compound Co/sub 17/Gd/sub 2/ is expected to be antiferromagnetic at low temperatures. (TTT)
