A process for separating D/sub 2/ from H/sub 2/ containing a very small amount of D/sub 2/ is described which is based on the difterent vapor pressures of alkali metal hydrides and deuterides. The process comprises reacting the H/ sub 2/-D/sub 2/ mixture with molten alkali metal at 0.5 to 10 atm to form alkali metal hydride, separating the hydride from the D/sub 2/-enriched gaseous residue, reducing the pressure and heating the hydride to effect dissociation, separating the molten alkali metal, and recirculating the metal for reaction with the
