In order to determine whether polymerization took place during irradiation or after the irradiation, samples of acrylonitrile (AN) and of vinylacetate (VA) were irradiated with 1.6-Mev electrons, Thermal effects of 10 to 40 cal/g could be detected calorimetrically to an accuracy of 1 cal/g. Electron paramagnetic resonance measuremenrts were taken to observe the accumulation of radicals during the irradiation at various temperatures, and the disappearance of the radicals after the irradiation, The initial rate of polymerization of acrylonitrile is proportional to the dose rate (W/sub poly/ approximates I/sup 0.8/). A limiting yield of polymer is observed at high irradiation doses at temperatures below -140 deg C. Postpolymerization was observed at -140, -120, and -90 deg C, but was absent at lower temperatures. During irradiation, the molecular weight of the polymer decreased wtth increasing dose from M = 3 x 10/sup 4/ to M = 7 x 10/sup 3/ at a dose of 150 M rad. During the course of the postpolymerization period, the molecular weight of the polymer increased to M = 10/sup 6/ after 10 hours at -90 deg C. Most of the polymerization takes place in the solid phase during the irradiation. On irradiating vinylacetate, no postpolymerization could be detected in the solid phase. The heat of fusion was 34 cal/g. In general, the radiation behavior of vinylacetate was similar to that of acrylonitrile. (TTT)
