A theory is presented for the spin wave contribution to the specific heat of dysprosium below the temperature of transition from ferromagnetic to spiral spin arrangement. The central feature of the theory is the nature of the spin wave spectrum. There is a substantial energy gap (E/sub g/) at the minimum of the spectrum. This is caused by the large magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies present, and is of magnitude 20 to 30 deg K. The transition from ferromagnet to spiral implies a spectrum that is nearly flat, for wave vectors in the direction of the hexagonal axis, for an appreci
