Measurements of the pressure-drop across the orifice of one of the shield-plug orifice assemblies to be used at HNPF indicated that: the core pressure drop required to yield the maximum predicted fuel element flow rate requirement of 22.5 lbs/sec is 11.0 psi; the temperature sensitivity of the orifice ranges from 75 to 160 deg F/in. over the full orifice stroke and is a maximum of 130 deg F/in. in the predicted adjustment range of 0.5 to 4.0 in. withdrawn. In all cases the flow rates for a given orifice position and pressure drop were within 1% of the average flow rates. In addition, the liquid level height in the upper plenum was found to have no influence on the flow rate for all plug positions from fully inserted to 3-in. withdrawn. For orifice positions of 3.5 and 4 in., flow into the upper plenum with a liquid level corresponding to 1000 deg F isothermal primary system was respectively 2.5 and 5% higher than flow into a plenum liquid corresponding to 345 deg F isothermal. The orifice plug can be manually adjusted to reposition (within 0.003 in.) over the entire 4-inches of plug travel. The torque required to adjust this orifice over the withdrawal stroke was found to vary between 6 and l6-in.-lbs and was constant at 2 in.-lbs when inserting the orifice plug. (auth)
