COMPATIBILITY OF MATERIALS WITH HIGH TEMPERATURE POTASSIUM. Final Progress Report, April 18, 1960 through December 31, 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4752276
The compatibility of potassium with suitable refractory containment materials was studied under conditions similar to those desired in lightweight, high-power, turbogenerator, nuclear space powerplants. Isothermal niobium alloy and superalloy capsule tests were performed in the temperature rage of 1450--2200 deg F under both static and dynamic conditions. A superalloy Rankine cycle loop was operated at a boiling temperature of 1800 deg F to test various containment materinls in potassium. Fabrication of two all-niobium alloy (Nb-1%Zr) Rankine cycle loops was initiated, but only one was fully completed and operated for short perioda of tirne in a vacuum chamber at boiling temperatures up to 2000 deg F.
