CHARGED $pi$-MESON PRODUCTION IN PROTON-PROTON COLLISIONS AT 1 Gev KINETIC ENERGY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4752025
The energy spectrum of charged pi mesons emitted in p-p collisions at 1.02 Bev kinetic energy was studied using a differential gas Cherenkov counter to measure the velocity of the mesons. The energy spectrum at 15 to 25 deg to the forward directi on in the laboratory fits more closely the spectrum shape predicted by the isobar model of meson production than that predicted by the statistical model (no isobar formation), and there is evidence for a forwardbackward peaking in the emission of the isobar in the CM system of the colliding nucleons. The results are discussed in the light of other recent work on the producti on of pi mesons in p-p collisions at 2 and 3 Bev kinetic energy. (auth)
