INSTRUMENTATION FOR SPACE RADIATION MEASUREMENTS. PART I

A description is given of a system of scintillation detectors employed as energy threshold devices for the detection of energetic electrons and protons; a phoswich detector, for the detection of neutrons in the upper atmosphere in the presence of high charged-particle fluxes; and a lowenergy electron spectrometer using Geiger-Mueller tubes, for the detection of auroral electrons. The means used for increasing the reliability of these detectors for aerospace and space uses are discussed. The performance of the detectors in space flights, balloon flights, and satellites is also outlined. (T.F.H.)
