ALPHA GAUGE FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF SMALL DENSITY THICKNESSES

An alpha-particle gage was developed based on a transmission, total- count principle. In consists of a thick alpha source and a surface-barrier detector. This simple combination eliminates many of the practical disadvantages of previous alpha-gage systems. Without mechanical or electronic adjustment, air density can be measured with a 1-sec time constant over the range from 0 to 1.1 mg/cm/sup 3/ with a maximum standard deviation of 5.9 x 10/sup -4/ mg/cm/sup 3/.
