MAGNETOSTRICTION IN Dy AND Ho

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4750291
Phenomenai magnetostriction was observed in Dy and Ho single crystals. For a circular basal plane Dy crystal preliminary measurements at 100 deg K show that a strain of --5800 x 10/sup -6/ develops along the a-axis when a 26 kOe applied field is rotated from parallel to an a-axis to parallel to a b-axis. This is sixty times as large as the magnetostriction in Co. The maximum strain along the a-axis shows a nearly linear decrease with increasing temperature above 100 deg K. In the case of a basal plane Ho crystal at 45 deg K it was found that when the 28 kOe applied field was rotated from parallel to an a-axis to parallel to a b-axis there was a maximum contraction along the a-axis of 2300 x 10/sup -6/ whereas there was a maximum expansion of 1800 x 10/sup -6/ along the b-axis. When a circular crystal containing the b and c axes was magnetized from 0 to 26 kOe at 45 deg K, a strain of +3500 x 10/sup -6/ was observed along the c-axis. This magnetostriction curve showed three slightly developed knees which agree well with the knees observed in the magnetization data for Ho previously reported. (auth)
