High tungsten alloys for service up to 1090 deg C were prepared and tested. Compositions containing between 90 and 99.5 wt% tungsten were produced by powder metallurgy techniques. Ternary W --Ni -Fe alloys exhibited maximum room-temperature strengih at 95 wt% tungsten, and tensile elongation values decreased above 90 wt% tungsten. At 1090 deg C the greatest strength occurred between 95 and 97 wt% tungsten; a 100-hour stress-rupture life was estimated at 2500 to 3000 psi for compositions containing up to 99 wt% tungsten. Quaternary additions of Al, C, Cr, Mo, Th, Ti, V, and Zr to a 90W --Ni --Fe base were studied. Moderate improvements in elevated-temperature properties were effected by alloys containing 0.1 wt% carbon, 3 wt% chromium or 5 wt% molybdenum; and room- temperature workability was not seriously impaired. Other alloy systems investigated included 90W -Ni --Cr and 90W --Ni-Ru. Properties of the compositions containing chromium were similar to those of the W -NiFe alloys; initial results for the W--Ni --Ru materials indicate a higher melting matrix phase which may improve the strength properties at 1090 deg C.
