A procedure is described for the direct activation analysis of paper chromatograms prepared from extracts of human sera for I/sup 127/ yields I/sup 128/. Iodine/sup 128 /was produced by an (n, gamma ) reaction on I/sup 127/ after exposure to a thermal neutron beam. Stringent post-irradiation purification was required to eliminate from the sample the other more active radiochemical products also activated in the paper. The sensitivity of activation analysis was compared with that of the ceric-arsenite method for the detection of iodine compounds on paper chromatograms. It was concluded that activation analysis should be used as a useful check of the ceric-arsenite method. (C.H.)
