Technical grade Pr and Nd monosuifides were prepared in a two-step reaction. In the first step, Pr/sub 6/O/sub 11/ and Nd/sub 2/O/sub were converted to the sesquisuifides by reaction with dried H/sub 2/S at 1000 to 1100 deg C. In the second step, Pr and Nd sesquisulfides were reacted as follows at 1850 deg C in vacuum (10/sup -2/ mm Hg): 2Me/sub 2/S/sub 3/ + Me/sub 2/O/sub 3/ + 3C = 6MeS + 3CO. In this reaction it was found that the sesquisuifide must be charged in a 60 to 70% excess over the stoichiometric amount. The excess can be present at the onset or added after a period of preheating. The need for the presence of an excess in the case of CeS but not of LaS is explained by the formation of the oxysulfides or of stable solid solutions of the lower oxides of Ce, Pr, and Nd in the sulfides. The existence of only one electron in the 5d orbital of the La atom permits the prediction of an easy preparation of Ga, Tb, and Lu monosulfides without the use of an excess of Me/sub 2/S/sub 3/.
