THE PROTON SYNCHROTRON OF CERN

The principles of a proton synchrotron are briefly reviewed, and the parameters of the CERN synchrotron are given. The problems presented by the design and construction of foundations for the machine are discussed. The instruments used in the measurements of length, angles, and levels to ensure the precision needed are described, and the results obtained are reported. (J.S.R.)
