In order to ensure the highest degree of efficiency, in any thermal power-generating system, the heat should be transferred to the cooling agent at the highest possible temperature. In the case of a reactor, the highest permissible temperature of the fuel and its cladding represents the chief limiting factor. Correlations between the temperature distribution in the fuel channels and variations observed in the fuel elements, the cladding, and the cooling agent are reviewed for the purpose of deriving the optimum distribution for a given neutron flux. The increase of the temperature exerts an influence on the nuclear physical correlations in the system, resulting in changes not only in the specific investment cost and the thermal efficiency of the heat transfer cycle but also in the specific fuel cost because it affects the needed enrichment and thereby also the burnout.
