An apparatus is described for the ultrasonic testing of butt-welded steel plates of substantial thickness. An ultrasonic probe is adapted to transmit an ultrasonic input signal through the region of material to be examined. A number of probes are adapted to receive the output signals from this region. Means are provided for reproducing visually the relative strengths of the output signals. (R.J.S.)
